Bible Reading: Hebrews 3
Hebrews 3:12-13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Take heed...what does that mean? It means keep your eyes open. It means pay attention and be alert. It means be on the lookout.
What are we to be looking out for? The Bible says an evil heart of unbelief. What exactly does that look like? It looks like a heart that departs from the living God.
Does that mean one day I can love and trust God and the next have an evil heart of unbelief? No, it means that a person can be right in the middle of Christian fellowship and yet have never believed on Christ. They can be raised in a Christian family. They can grow up around Christian friends and yet never have come to know Jesus for themselves.
We are to exhort one another daily to trust in Christ. Unbelief is what the evil heart is all about. A heart that does not believe in Jesus is a heart that will be hard. Sin will deceive the heart to follow after lusts instead of following Jesus Christ.
What do we do about this? We keep our eyes open. We look to those around us. We continually live a godly life and keep on encouraging them to trust in Jesus. Don't take for granted that children of Christian parents are automatically going to trust Jesus. They must have the gospel proclaimed to them and be exhorted to follow him. They need to see genuine Christian love. They need to know your dependance upon God for everything.
We are in a war. We must be vigilant. The deceitfulness of sin is real. Take heed!
In Christ,
Rody
