Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Bible Reading: Hebrews 7
Hebrews 7:22-25 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. 23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: 24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

The New Testament which is a covenant in the blood of Jesus himself is better than the Old Covenant. The reason is Jesus Christ. He is our high priest. The priests of the Old Covenant were the descendants of Aaron. Some of these men were godly and some were not. However, they all died. They had to be succeeded by their sons.

Jesus will never die so he has an unchangeable priesthood. He is a priest forever! Now think of the ministry of the priest. He goes to God on behalf of the people. He makes offerings for the people. This priest, Jesus needed no offering for himself because he is without sin. However, he does make an offering for the people. He offered himself as our sacrifice!

Not only that but his intercession is unending. He lives forever and makes constant and perpetual intercession for us. For this reason, he is able to save anyone who comes to God through him to the uttermost. None will be lost. Jesus gives eternal life as a free gift. He intercedes without ceasing. He lives forever.

This is the New Covenant in the blood of Jesus. Are you included in this covenant? You can be if you will hear his word, believe his word and call upon his name.

In Christ,
Rody

The things which he suffered

Bible Reading: Hebrews 5
Hebrews 5:7-8 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.

It is hard to think of, but the Son of God suffered greatly. The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). In his humanity, the Son of God prayed to the Father who was able to save him from death...

But wait, the Father did not save him from death. Jesus did die. Yes, but only at the right time. The Father sustained the Son until it was time for him to be presented as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. In the garden, Jesus was nigh unto death. He prayed and the Father sustained him.

We learn two very important things about the Son of God and what he did for us in his humanity. First, he was heard in that he feared. This is a godly reverence when approaching God. Jesus did not take the Father lightly or hold him as a common relationship. He approached the Father with respect, submission, honor and reverence. We must learn from Jesus in this respect. He is our example of approaching the Father in prayer.

Second, we learn that he learned obedience by the things which he suffered. It is not that he did not know what obedience was. Jesus experienced what it is to be a man and obey the Father in the face of suffering. The suffering was no excuse for disobedience. Jesus faced the worst this world and Satan had and he obeyed the Father.

He did this for you and me! When tempted he did not sin. When suffering he did not doubt. Jesus is our high priest and he endured all this for us. Not only so that he can understand our temptation and suffering. But more importantly so that he could achieve the victory for us.

Trust him.

Labour to Enter that rest

Bible Reading: Hebrews 4
Hebrews 4:10-11 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The Sabbath day was a big deal for Israel. It reminded them of that fact that God had worked to create for six days and then rested from his works the seventh day. The Bible tells us there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God. Is that Sunday? No... Is it still Saturday? No, the Bible is not talking about a particular day, but about a relationship with Jesus Christ.

When someone places their faith in Jesus, they enter into his rest. The work of creation was complete on day six - God was finished creating. The work of redemption was completed on the cross - God was finished redeeming. Now, when someone believes on Jesus, they enter into the rest of redemption. That person ceases from his own religious works to save him.

The book of Hebrews reminds us that we need to labour to enter into this rest. That sounds like a contradiction, but it really explains a lot. We need to do what Jesus told the people in John six:

John 6:28-29 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

We need to believe on Jesus. When we do, we enter into the perpetual rest of trusting him. Unbelief keeps a man from this rest. It keeps him dependent upon himself. The Bible says we must believe on Christ.

Let us labour to help many others enter into the rest of Jesus. Let us proclaim the gospel clearly and boldly. Let us live the life of rest that is one of walking daily in Christ.

In Christ,
Rody

Exhort one another daily

Bible Reading: Hebrews 3
Hebrews 3:12-13 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Take heed...what does that mean? It means keep your eyes open. It means pay attention and be alert. It means be on the lookout.

What are we to be looking out for? The Bible says an evil heart of unbelief. What exactly does that look like? It looks like a heart that departs from the living God.

Does that mean one day I can love and trust God and the next have an evil heart of unbelief? No, it means that a person can be right in the middle of Christian fellowship and yet have never believed on Christ. They can be raised in a Christian family. They can grow up around Christian friends and yet never have come to know Jesus for themselves.

We are to exhort one another daily to trust in Christ. Unbelief is what the evil heart is all about. A heart that does not believe in Jesus is a heart that will be hard. Sin will deceive the heart to follow after lusts instead of following Jesus Christ.

What do we do about this? We keep our eyes open. We look to those around us. We continually live a godly life and keep on encouraging them to trust in Jesus. Don't take for granted that children of Christian parents are automatically going to trust Jesus. They must have the gospel proclaimed to them and be exhorted to follow him. They need to see genuine Christian love. They need to know your dependance upon God for everything.

We are in a war. We must be vigilant. The deceitfulness of sin is real. Take heed!

In Christ,
Rody

They shall be changed

Bible Reading: Hebrews 1
Hebrews 1:10-12 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

Jesus is the Creator. He laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the works of his hands. (John 1:1 and Colossians 1:16)

Here we learn that the present earth and heavens will not last forever. The Bible says they will perish. The earth and heavens will wax old as a garment. Like a pair of blue jeans, they will eventually wear out and a new pair will be necessary. The things that seem so permanent will be changed. The Rocky Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean will one day be no more. The Bible says:

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

For the believer, we know that this is the destiny of the earth and the heavens. When Jesus returns, this worn out universe will need to be folded up and a new one will be necessary.

2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

John got to see the future and in Scripture, he tells us what we have to look forward to:

Revelation 21:1-2 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

The world and all we know about our universe will one day change. But Jesus Christ will not change. Jesus will remain and his years shall not fail. Don't put your trust in things that will change. Put your faith in Jesus Christ and he will take you through all the changes that are coming!

He has promised!

Profitable

Bible Reading: Philemon
Philemon 1:10-11 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: 11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

Do you pray for other believers? It is called intercession and Scripture instructs us to intercede for others. There are so many times when people need our prayers. However, here is an example in scripture where one person is interceding for another to a man.

Onesimus was a runaway slave who ran into Paul. Paul knew him because he was of the household of Philemon. While he was with Paul, he was led to faith in Christ. Now, Paul saw him as a son in the faith and he is sending him back to Philemon. There is a difference now. The old Onesimus that ran away is dead and a new creature is returning.

This epistle has a play on words that makes it all the more interesting. The name 'Onesimus' means useful or beneficial. Now what use is a slave that possibly steals from you and runs away? Not much!

Philemon would have wanted his things back and would have been within the law to have Onesimus punished for stealing and running away. However, Paul is interceding and he says that 'Useful' who used to be unprofitable is returning and is now profitable!

This is a wonderful example in Scripture of the change that Jesus Christ makes when he comes into our lives. He literally makes us a new creature. He sees us that way and other believers need to see us that way too.

Do you know any like Onesimus? Do you know any who were unprofitable but then met Jesus Christ and became profitable? If we are honest, that is the story of us all. Let's live the new life Christ has given us. Let us also receive those who have a new life and encourage them.

Speak evil of no man

Bible Reading: Titus 3
Titus 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

What would our world be like if we kept this admonition in Scripture? What if all Christians did not speak evil of any man?

Some things would begin to happen. First, we would begin to change the way we think. Jesus said:

Mark 7:20-23 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

What we say comes from what we are thinking in our hearts. If we stop speaking evil, it means we are not thinking evil thoughts.

Next, we would begin to view people differently. We would value people and know that instead of speaking evil of them, even if they have sinned, we must show them love.

1 Peter 4:8 And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

If we love people, we cover their sins instead of broadcasting their sins.

Finally, we would begin to realize how devastating our tongues can be.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

James 3:2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

If you can bridle your tongue, you will be able to control your whole body. Please consider what Jesus wants you to use the power of speech he has given you for. Has he given it to speak evil of others? Has he given it to love others and bring glory to him?

looking for that blessed hope

Bible Reading: Titus 2
Titus 2:13-14 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Christians are to live looking for 'that blessed hope'. What is that? What is that blessed hope we are to live looking forward to? It is the glorious appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ and the accompanying change that will come with his appearing.

Jesus established this hope among the twelve as he shared that last Passover meal with them:

John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

We hope for and look forward to the Lord's return. He promised and he will do it. When he does, our bodies will be changed:

1 Corinthians 15:51-52 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

Now that is something to look forward to. This is the blessed hope of the believer. Those who do not believe in Jesus have no hope. We however, hope daily for the Lord's return. And so we live hoping and praying with John:

Revelation 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

Preaching

Bible Reading: Titus 1
Titus 1:2-3 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; 3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour.

The promise of eternal life is something that God has always promised to his people. The hope of life beyond this life is essential to this life. If there is nothing beyond this life, "let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die!" But there is eternity.

The interesting thing about this promise made to mankind is that God has made this promise in his word. But how do men and women learn of this incredible promise?

God's method of manifesting his word is through preaching. God could let people know of his promise in a lot of different ways. He could send angelic messengers. He could open the skies and speak directly to all men. We could be born with his promised tattooed on our bodies. But, no...God calls men to preach.

Preaching is a despised method of communication and it seems to be more so in our day. The Bible says:

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Some will hear preaching and some will not. It is not up to us to decide for others. We need to preach Christ. The Bible says:

Romans 10:13-15 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

How will they hear without a preacher? God's method of delivering his message is through preaching. That does not mean a man standing behind a pulpit. It simply means God's people proclaiming God's word.

Will you preach the Word? It is God's method!

Do the work of an evangelist

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 4
2 Timothy 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Timothy was a younger man than Paul. He met him in Lystra on his second missionary journey. Paul took Timothy with him and trained him as they traveled and preached. Later, Paul asked Timothy to stay at Ephesus and lead the church there because he was concerned about false doctrine (1 Timothy 1:3).

Later Paul wrote 2 Timothy from prison to encourage Timothy. There he tells him to do the work of an evangelist. In our day, we have those who have evangelistic ministries and are called 'evangelists'. What is the work of an evangelist?

What did Paul mean when he wrote these words to Timothy? The first mention of the word 'evangelist' is in Acts:

Acts 21:8 And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

We can study the life of Philip and we learn that God used him to preach the gospel in Samaria and to lead the Ethiopian Eunuch to Christ (Acts 8). So we can say that an evangelist is a preacher who preaches Christ where he is not know.

The next mention of 'evangelist' is in Ephesians:

Ephesians 4:11-12 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

Evangelists also work to perfect the saints for the work of ministry. Christian maturity means that you are growing in ministry. A true evangelist not only preaches Christ where he is not known, but also works with the church to perfect them in the work of evangelism.

The third and last mention of the term 'evangelist' is here in 2 Timothy. Please notice there is not gift of evangelism in the New Testament. Yes, there are evangelists, but the work of evangelism belongs to all the church. Evangelists lead us in this work and equip us to be better at the work of evangelism.

Please don't fall into the trap of thinking evangelism is the work of the evangelists. They are gifted to help all saints to take part in this Great Commission work.

How long has it been since you talked with someone about faith in Jesus Christ?

Let's do it today!

All scripture

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 3
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Scripture is such a treasure! Yes it was written by holy men, but inspired by God himself.

2 Peter 1:20-21 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Every word of God is pure, the Bible declares!

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

The Bible is given by inspiration of God and is profitable to the man of God. Do you take in the pure words of God on a daily basis? It is good for you.

It is profitable for doctrine so that you can know the teaching of the Bible. It is profitable to reprove you when you are sinning. It is profitable to correct you and set you back where God wants you to be. The Bible is the tool for instruction in righteousness.

So many Christians are seeking counselors and information in many different places. The place to go is to God's word. It will make you perfect. It will furnish you with everything you need to live the life God wants for you to live.

Jesus has given us his Word. It will furnish us with everything we need. It will make us perfect (complete). Let us get into it daily and hear what our Creator and Redeemer has to say to us! Let the Word have it's teaching, reproving, correcting and instructing work in our lives!

Recover themselves

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 2
2 Timothy 2:25-26 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Those who teach the truth of the Bible cannot change anyone's heart. What they can do is to instruct others with a meek attitude. They can show mercy and grace and tell the truth of God.

If they will hear this truth, and admit they are wrong, God will give them repentance. It takes humility to come to God because we must admit that we are sinners. Those who oppose the truth of God oppose themselves. They contradict themselves with their ideas and lifestyle. But when they hear the truth about Jesus Christ and confess him as Lord, then repentance begins to come to them in all things.

People must recover themselves. What does this mean? Does it mean that salvation is a work that we must do? No, it means that a person must hear the truth of Jesus and trust him in order to be delivered from the snare of the devil. A person who opposes Bible truth is in the devil's snare and the only way out is repentance.

Will you in meekness share the truth of Jesus today? Who knows what God will do?!!!

The testimony of our Lord

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 1
2 Timothy 1:7-8 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God.

The spirit of fear that keeps us from witnessing for Jesus does not come from God. Have you ever been paralyzed with fear as you thought about talking with someone about Jesus Christ? That feeling comes from the world, the flesh and the devil. God has given us power to to bold. He has given us love for people and for him. He has given us a sound mind so that we can speak plainly when we share Christ.

The feeling of being ashamed of Jesus Christ and fear when talking with others about him is something we all deal with. The Bible is clear however that it does not come from God. We are not to be ashamed of Christ or of his people who suffer for the gospel.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

The gospel is the power of God unto salvation. We can boldly and lovingly preach the good news of Jesus because we know that it changes people's lives. When we are ridiculed or persecuted for our faith in Christ we can rejoice because that is the way Jesus was treated. We can also know that God has empowered us to be his faithful people in this world.

Let's share Christ boldly!

From such withdraw thyself

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 6
1 Timothy 6:5 Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

There are some people you should avoid. Especially those who pervert the truth of God. Don't listen to their teaching and don't let them influence your decisions. These men have corrupt minds. They are destitute of the truth.

What do they teach that is so far from the truth and so much to be avoided? They suppose that gain is godliness. They love money and teach that if you have a lot of wealth, it is because you are godly.

Run!!!

The Bible teaches something different!

1 Timothy 6:6-8 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

Great gain in the Christian life is godliness with contentment. We are to be content with the necessities of life because we cannot take the things of this life with us to the next. Jesus said:

Matthew 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

A desire to be rich in this world is a trap! You will be caught up with greed and all manny of foolish and hurtful lusts.

1 Timothy 6:9-10 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Don't try to be rich. Don't covet worldly wealth. Be content with what you have and store up treasures in heaven. Focus on that which is eternal.

All purity

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 5
1 Timothy 5:1-2 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

The church is to operate like a family. Older men are like fathers to us. Younger men are like brothers. Older women are like mothers and younger women like sisters. This is Christ's church.

If you grew up in a healthy, whole family environment this is easy and hard at the same time. It is easy because you know what it is like to live with a father, mother, sisters and brothers. You understand the love, mercy and grace that come from a good family. It is hard in that you already have a family and therefore you are not 'needy' to have the people in the church for your family.

If you grew up in a broken family this is easy and hard at the same time. It is hard in that you do not have the experience of knowing the love, mercy and grace of a whole family. It is easy in that the church becomes the family that you never had.

In the church we both give and receive. We give love, grace and encouragement. We give our gifts and our service. We receive these things from others.

Let us prayerfully consider one another in the church. Let us love and live like a family. Let us prayerfully realize how we can give as brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers. For some, we are the only family they have. For others, we are learning from them how to be better and more mature Christians. Some we teach; others learn from us.

In Christ,
Rody

Let no man despise thy youth

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 4
1 Timothy 4:12-13 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Timothy was a young man and he was in a position of responsibility in the church. Timothy was a part of the apostle Paul's team and was serving as a pastor. This would mean that Timothy was considered an elder. Paul knew that Timothy would have to silence the false teachings of some and that these older men would try to discredit Timothy because he was a young man.

Young men find themselves in this place in life many times. Some are in positions of responsibility and some would like to be.
Older men sometimes despise them because of their youth and will not listen to them or give them the opportunities that they should. What should a young man do in this situation?

The Bible tells us plainly: live a mature Christian life and people will see your maturity! When young men want to be heard but they live immature lives, they are stifling their own opportunities. But, when a young man shows by the transformed life he lives and the wisdom he has gained that he is a mature Christ-follower, others will see this.

Paul tells Timothy to be an example in Christian virtues. Let the life of Christ show through you! Be an example in word and lifestyle. Be an example in love and spiritual maturity. Be an example in faith and purity. The path to wisdom and transformation in the Christian life is to be filled with the Spirit and to be filled with the Word of God.

Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

When your mind is transformed, you will prove that good, acceptable and perfect will of God and others will recognize it. Learn Bible doctrine and live it. Share the good news of Jesus Christ and exhort others to follow him.

1 Timothy 4:15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

When young men act like children they will not be taken seriously. But when young men show Christian maturity and live a life that is an example of a Christ-follower, others will see and take you seriously.

In Christ,
Rody

The office of a bishop

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 3
1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

The traditions of men have certainly made understanding the Bible more difficult. When a person uses the word 'bishop' today many people think of a high churchman who is dressed in long flowing robes with some kind of funny hat on his head. They think of a guy who supposedly has authority over other preachers. This is too bad because that is not what a bishop is.

The word used here is a word that speaks of overseeing the church of Jesus Christ. The same word is used to describe the work that the elders in Ephesus did:

Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

When Paul addressed the elders (see Acts 20:17) he said the Holy Ghost had made them overseers. This is the same Greek word translated 'bishop' in 1 Timothy 3:1. An elder is an overseer or bishop. He tells these men to 'feed' the church of God. 'To feed' is the verb form of the Greek word translated 'pastor' in other places in the New Testament.

Peter too used these words in the same way.

1 Peter 5:1-2 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind

Peter tells the elders to 'feed' or pastor the flock of God, taking the 'oversight'. Once again, 'oversight' is the same word in Greek translated 'bishop' in 1 Timothy 3:1.

What does this mean? It means that the words 'elder', 'pastor', and 'bishop' are three words used to describe the same office in the church. An elder is a pastor is a bishop. And according to the Bible, this is a good work. The Holy Ghost calls these men and utilizes them in his work of ministry in the church. These men are local men. They live and serve in a local congregation and are known by the flock. They do what Jesus told Peter to do:

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

Jesus has given as gifts gifted men to the church.

Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers

These men desire to serve and are qualified to serve. Their job is to feed or pastor the lambs of Jesus. These men do a good work. Let's pray that God protect and keep those who are bishops. Let us pray for God to raise up more men to do this good work.

Lead a quiet and peaceable life

Bible Reading: 1 Timothy 2
1 Timothy 2:1-2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

The Bible says that first of all in the church our emphasis must be on prayer. We are to pray with all kinds of prayers for all men. We are especially to pray for kings and those who are in authority. These men lead nations. The interesting thing about this is the result of our prayers.

We are to pray for those who lead nations so that we can lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and honesty. Just what does the Bible mean by a quiet and peaceable life?

It means a life where we focus on following Christ. A quiet life is a life free from wars between nations. It is a life free from the restraints of government on the open worship of Jesus Christ. A quiet and peaceable life is a life where we focus on minding our own business and taking care of our families. It is a life where we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into the good works that God as ordained that we walk in.

The life of godliness and honesty is one where we are motivated by the Holy Spirit to bear fruit. As branches abiding in the Vine we bear much fruit and glorify God. The nation should pass laws to preserve life and protect private property. The church should live in such a way that the doctrine of God is ornamented and people truly see the love that we have for one another.

It does not matter whether we have Christians or non-Christians in positions of authority. We are to pray for them that we may lead this kind of a life. We must pray for the salvation of our leaders so they too can truly have the peace that passes all understanding because of the hope that they have in Jesus Christ.

Let us pray!

Follow thou me

Bible Reading: John 21
John 21:21-22 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

Peter had just been recommissioned by Jesus. Since he denied Jesus three times, Jesus asked him three times if he loved him and told him to feed his sheep. That is what shepherds do - they care for sheep. Not only did Jesus put Peter back onto the shepherd's path of preaching, but he also told him that his life would end as a martyr and in this way he would bring glory to God.

John 21:18-19 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. 19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

In essence, Jesus told Peter that he would die a violent martyr's death. He also instructed him that his death would glorify God. He also told him it would happen when he was old. This would be hard to take, would it not? I don't want to know how I will die! I would be thinking about it from now on.

John was also sitting there and Peter wanted to know what would be John's future. What about him?

Aren't we like that? We compare ourselves with ourselves. We have a calling from Jesus and we compare what he is doing in our lives with what he is doing in someone else's. We look to our ministry and wonder how that compares with someone else's ministry. Jesus' answer is very telling and very freeing.

It does not matter what Jesus' plan is for someone else. You don't need to worry about that. It does not concern you. If I want him to live until I return, what is that to you? Wow! Jesus makes no excuse for having a different plan for one disciple over another. One person glorifies God in their martyr's death while another glorifies God in their long life.

Jesus gave Peter no answer. He told him it was none of his business how Jesus dealt with John. Instead of comparing another disciple, follow Jesus! That is a great word for all of us. Follow Jesus! Stop looking around and comparing. Get in the Bible and get the Word of God into you then follow Jesus. He has a plan for you that is not exactly the same as someone else's life.
