If thou newest the gift of God

Bible Reading: John 4
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

There were two thing the Samaritan woman needed to know. First, she needed to know the gift of God. Do you know the gift of God? Many people believe in God and many people know that God gives gifts, but they reason that 'God helps those who help themselves'. They think that God can help you if you merit his help. However, the Bible says that God helps those who cannot help themselves. God's Word tells us of the gift that God has given.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The gift of God is Jesus! He GAVE His only begotten Son so that those who believe could receive Him. Jesus is life, so if you receive Him, you receive eternal life. The woman at the well needed to know about God's gift.

The second thing she needed to know was who she was talking to. She was talking to Jesus and he is the Messiah. The One who was prophesied to come and be the Savior of the world was standing right in front of her. Many people think God is distant and inaccessible, but he is not. He is very close to all of us.

Romans 10:6-8. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) 7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) 8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach

The Word is nigh thee! Jesus is close. Do you know the gift of God? Do you know who he is? Do you want the living water that he has? How do you get it? Jesus told the woman and the same goes for all of us. Ask him for the living water. How do you receive God's gift of Jesus? Ask for it. Have you asked Jesus to save you? Have you asked him for the water of life? He will give it, but you have to know who he is and what the gift of God is.

God is loving and gracious. He wants to give us the gift of Jesus if we will only ask.
