Bible Reading: Judges 3; Acts 7; Jeremiah 16; Mark 2
Judges 3:5-7 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
How can anyone forget God? The Bible tells us again and again that your spouse will either do you good or lead you astray. For the children of Israel, they did not completely drive the Canaanites out of the land. They lived among them and made them servants to the Israelites. It was not long before the Israelites began to intermarry with the Canaanites. When they did this Israel began to serve their gods. It only took one generation for Israel to forget the LORD their God!
Moses had given them God's law and specifically warned them about this:
Exodus 34:14-16 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
Please notice that God considers the worship of false gods to be 'whoring after their gods'. This means he expects his people to be faithful to him and worshipping a false god is spiritual adultery. If God makes a man and his wife 'one flesh', then how important is it that they believe the same thing?
Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Can you walk with God and not agree with him? Answer – no. Can you walk with your spouse and not agree with him/her? Answer – no. If you are going to walk together, you must agree. As we look at the sad state of America today, might we see that Christians in this county have forgotten the LORD Jesus Christ? Is it possible that a generation ago the sons and daughters of believers married unbelievers and began to worship false gods? Many false gods are worshipped in this land. Mammon (Money), Bachus (the god of wine and pleasure), Mars (the god of war), and Me (worshipping myself as a god) are all favorite American gods.
As believers in Jesus Christ it is imperative that we have a Biblical view of marriage. We need to learn from the mistakes of Israel and not make the same ones! Let's worship Jesus alone! He is worthy.
