What think ye of Christ?

Bible Reading: Matthew 22

Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

The Sadducees and the Pharisees were trying to trick Jesus by ‘entangling him in his talk’. They were asking him all kinds of questions and Jesus was turning the tables on them and questioning them! Jesus finally took the conversation away from vague theological issues onto the subject of himself. That is what we should all do when having a conversation about Biblical issues. Yes, there are legitimate questions to be answered, but ultimately the most important question is the one that Jesus asked the Pharisees. “What think ye of Christ?”

Jesus asked them whose son the Christ or the Messiah would be. They were quick to answer that he would be the Son of David. This is a true answer, but Jesus was taking them deeper.

Matthew 22:43-45 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

Think of it! How could David say that the Messiah was Lord if he was one of his descendants? The descendant of David would call him lord. But David said that the LORD said to his Lord… The Messiah would sit on the right had of Jehovah till he made his enemies his footstool. Jesus was pointing out that in the Scriptures; the Messiah was much more than just a man. He was a descendant of David, but he was much more than that. He was David’s Lord. The reason for this of course is that Jesus was David’s Creator!

There it is – right there in the Old Testament! That is an amazing reference to the fact that Jesus is more than just a man. David knew it, too! Do you? Do you know that Jesus is more than just a man? Do you know that Jesus is the everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6)? He is the Lord of David and he is our Lord as well!

In Christ,
