Free from righteousness

Bible Reading: Romans 6

Romans 6:20-21 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Who do you serve? Everyone will serve someone. You will either serve sin, self, Satan or Christ. Here the Bible points out that before these people became Christians they were the servants of sin. A person may not realize it at the time but everyone who is not a believer in Jesus is a servant of sin. As a matter of fact, everyone is a servant of Satan who is not a Christian.

Ephesians 2:2-3 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

The apostle here says that a person who is a servant of sin is free from righteousness. You can only be the servant of one master. If you serve sin it dominates all of your time. He asks the question of what the fruit of the old way of life is. What do you have to show for the years of serving sin? All the fruit of those days is bad fruit. When you think about it you are ashamed of it. It is all about lust and pride. All those things lead to death. This is all the life apart from Christ can produce. The end result is death.

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

It seemed like the thing to do at the time. Now looking back it is embarrassing to think of the things your old master made you do. When you served sin, it was leading you down a path of destruction.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

As a follower of Christ you can now see that being a slave to sin was disastrous. You are now free from sin. Now you are free to serve God. The fruit of being a Christ-follower is holiness and you have the promise of everlasting life to look forward to! What a difference. Sin is not a good master, but God is always good. Serve God!

In Christ,
