Their conscience also bearing witness

Bible Reading: Romans 2

Romans 2:14-15 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

In Romans 2, the apostle is dealing with the self-righteous person who said they had kept the law and condemned others for their law breaking. Paul first gives an example of a Gentile who keeps the law and then an example of a Jew who breaks the law. Romans 2 is the beginning of a long discussion that will lead to:

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

The Bible says that every man has the work of the law written in their heart. This is the work of a God given mechanism called a conscience. It means to have knowledge of the difference between right and wrong. Here is how it works. When you do wrong, your conscience accuses you. That inner voice tells you when you have done something that is wrong. But how do we know what is wrong? What is the gauge for right and wrong? It comes from God. His law is the difference between right and wrong.

There are some who say that right and wrong depend on culture. Different cultures determine right and wrong for them. But according to the Bible, right and wrong come from God and he has written it on the human heart. The conscience also works in favor of good. When you do good, your conscience excuses you and you know that you have done right. The conscience is a powerful thing and when it is trained by the word of God it is a good guide for us.

Western society is trying to rewrite morality right now. In areas like abortion and marriage, they are trying to redefine what is right and wrong. However, God’s Word has spoken on these issues. Our conscience lines up with God’s ways. He gave it to us so that we would know we have done wrong and seek for his forgiveness.

Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Instead of challenging God’s Holy Word, let’s listen to it and seek for the forgiveness that comes only by the redemption through the blood of Jesus!

In Christ,
