Bible Reading: 1 Kings 15; Colossians 2; Ezekiel 45; Psalms 99-101
Psalms 100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
This Psalm is said to be ‘A Psalm of praise’ and the Holy Spirit did not tell us who he inspired to write it. It begins by calling worshippers to joy and gladness in singing praises to God. It continues by reminding us that God is our Creator. This is obviously a call to humility as we consider that we are finite creatures who must be shepherded by our God. Because of this, we are to be thankful when we worship God and praise him continually for the gift of life. The Psalm concludes with the pronouncement of three of the wonderful attributes of our loving God.
The LORD is good – Because of a wrong view of humanity this statement does not seem so amazing at first. Think of it – we say cookies are good and we tell our children they are good little boys and girls. But when we think of what the Bible actually says of human nature, this is a grand statement about God!
Romans 3:10-12 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
God is good. He is inherently good. His nature is good. It is not just that he does good, but He IS good. We can say that of no human except One – Jesus Christ.
Mark 10:17-18 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
His mercy is everlasting – The mercy of God never ends. The mercy of a king or ruler will eventually end. Either they will die or they will stop showing mercy over and over again. But God’s mercy is everlasting. He has everlasting compassion on his creatures.
Lamentations 3:22-23 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
His truth endures to all generations – God’s truth does not change! It endures to all generations. God’s Word is the same today that it was thousands of years ago. We have an old Book called the Bible which is God’s truth (John 17:17). We know the Savior, Jesus who is the truth (John 14:6). The truth endures. Think of all the changes in science over the years as new discoveries are made – yet God’s truth does not change.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Praise the Lord!
In Christ,
Rody
