I am with thee according to thy heart

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 14; Romans 12; Jeremiah 51; Psalm 30

1 Samuel 14:6-7 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few. And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

Jonathan knew that the enemy must be engaged but his father, king Saul was standing undecided under a pomegranate tree with six hundred men. His father was not willing to obey the voice of the Lord and had offered a sacrifice that it was not his place to offer without waiting for Samuel. Jonathan was unwilling to sit any longer without doing what needed to be done. Do you ever find yourself in that position? Have you ever known what needed to be done, but everyone else was sitting under the pomegranate tree undecided? If you have you know where Jonathan was coming from when he said to his armourbearer, “Let’s go pick a fight!”

Jonathan was not sure of the outcome of his actions. He did not know if he would be victorious or not. He said, “It may be that the LORD will work for us.” Here is what is so great about Jonathan’s move – even though he was not assured of victory, he knew something must be done. He also knew something wonderful about God. It does not take an army for God to give victory! He can save by many or by few. Jonathan knew of men like Gideon who had gained victory with a few men so that God got all the glory. Jonathan was fighting the Lord’s battle and not some battle he had come up with. He knew if there was a victory it would not be by might or by power, but by the Spirit of God! (Zechariah 4:6).

His armourbearer knew that Jonathan was trusting fully in the LORD and he knew he could trust the heart of Jonathan. He pledged his allegiance to Jonathan and was willing to die with him because he was with him according to his heart. Jonathan’s heart was given to the glory of God and the armourbearer knew it!

We are in a war and so many today are sitting under the pomegranate tree waiting for instructions when we already have our instructions:

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

We also know that we will be victorious in the battle:

1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Let us go over! Are you with me?

In Christ,
Rody
