2 Chronicles 19 &20; Revelation 8; Zechariah 4; John 7
Zechariah 4:10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
The prophet Zechariah was sent to be an encourager to Zerubbabel and Joshua. Their task was to see to the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem after the exile. There was opposition to the work and apathy on the part of the remnant. The work had begun, and Zechariah was reminding them that not only would it be finished, but Zerubbabel would be the one to see it through. They had made progress, now instead of being discouraged because there was not more done, they were to be encouraged and press on in the mighty power of the Holy Ghost.
We need to be encouraged and reminded of this truth! Why would we despise small things? Small things grow into big things to the glory of God! Think of a small baby that will grow into a mature man or woman who can influence nations for the cause of Christ. Think of a small idea that with God’s help can grow into a mighty ideology to the salvation of many! Think of two or three gathered together in the name of Jesus with a vision to share the gospel and start a church for God’s glory. If we can stay long enough and with God’s help see the bigger picture, a few people could make an eternal difference when they preach the gospel in the Holy Ghost’s power and people are saved. Think of a small family that raises their children for the glory of God and sees parenting as discipleship.
Our world is impressed and fascinated with big and flashy. However, God many times starts with small things. He uses small boys to kill big giants and small groups of disciples who preach the gospel and pen the New Testament for the entire world. Jesus commended a small church in the New Testament because they had all the right things in place.
Revelation 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
The strength they had was aimed toward the Lord’s work. They kept the word of God and they did not deny the name of Jesus. It has been said that dynamite comes in small packages. Kingdom work many times happens in small and seemingly insignificant ways. Don’t be discouraged because the work before you seems small. God is able to multiply it for his glory in mighty ways!
In Christ,
Rody
