Whose house are we

Bible Reading: 2 Kings 21; Hebrews 3; Hosea 14; Psalm 139

Hebrews 3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

The comparison in chapter 3 of Hebrews is between Moses and Jesus Christ. Moses was a faithful servant over the house of God but Jesus is the Son. He is over his own house. What is that house that Jesus is the head of? It is his church. The Bible says:

1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The Bible tells us that God’s house is the church and Christ is over that church. What is the church? Is it a denomination? Is it a building? No, the church is the people who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be their Savior. We are the church! We are the house! The metaphor is used in Scripture of the church being the body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13-14 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.

The head of the body of Christ is Christ!

Ephesians 1:22-23 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Now the Bible tells us that we are the house of Christ if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. Confidence and rejoicing are two wonderful things to think of when we think of Jesus. First, we have confidence because he promised to save us and we trust him. Second, we have rejoicing because in Christ we are forgiven of our sins and have the promise of eternal life. If this is true in our lives, we will hold fast until we die, or Jesus comes to get us!

Do you give the church the emphasis it deserves? Do you treat the church as the house of Christ? Do you love the church knowing that Christ does? Are you faithful to the church? The church is not a small thing! It is a big thing in this world because it is the house of Christ.

In Christ,
