The star went before them

Bible Reading: Matthew 2

Matthew 2:9-10 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

By the time the wise men came to Jerusalem, they apparently could no longer see the star. They had seen the star in the east, but now they were asking for directions. When they began on their journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, they saw the star again. This time it lead them. It moved and they followed it to the very house where Jesus was! Truly this was a miraculous star ordained by God to guide these men to Jesus.

Isn’t it wonderful to know that God has a way of leading us? He leads us by his Word and his Spirit. The wise men knew the significance of the star based on the teaching of one of their wise men from years before. Daniel had been the chief of the wise men in the courts of Babylon and Persia. He must have taught the wise men that Bible prophecy concerning Jesus.

Numbers 24:17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.

Daniel had so looked forward to the coming of his king, that the wise men had remembered the prophecy. When they saw the strange star, they knew it was the one who Daniel had told them about. They wanted to worship the king who Daniel worshipped! The Word led them. Then when they arrived in Jerusalem, Herod asked the scribes where Messiah would be born. They quoted Micah 5:2 and once again the Word led them. As they proceeded down the road the star once more appeared and they rejoiced! I believe the star was the Shekinah glory of God himself. So God guided them by his Word and his Spirit.

I pray that you and I would experience God’s leadership this year. Let his Word and his Spirit be your guides.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

In Christ,
